St Michael defeats the devil - a photo on Flickriver

One of just four medieval churches within the borders of the City of Plymouth. The parish included Devonport docks, and the church was substantially rebuilt in the early 18th Century to increase capacity. The north aisle is on the plan of the original church. The nave is wider than it is long. The chancel was added in the 19th Century along with a lady chapel, which was later demolished.

The 18th Century box pews were removed in the 19th Century, and the Victorian replacements were in turn replaced by a refurnishing in the 1930s. The church escaped serious damage in the Plymouth Blitz. It was reordered in the early 21st Century, the benches were removed but their bench ends reset as panelling on the nave walls.

The most memorable feature of the interior is the wide range of memorials of the 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries, many of them for parishioners associated with the Royal Navy and the Devonport dockyards.
