Dunstable - High Street North. And the Life and Death of Gary Cooper.

            The Postcard

A postally unused Frith's Series postcard. The card, which is a glossy real photograph, has a divided back.

Note the Post Office Telephones van on the right with an L-plate on the front bumper. This means that the photograph was taken before 1981, because in that year 'Post Office Telephones' became 'British Telecom'.

A car parked on the left (blocked in by an illegally parked van) has a registration number with an 'E' suffix. This means that the photograph was taken after the 1st. January 1967 which is when the 'E' suffix was introduced.

Double yellow lines at the side of the road mean no waiting at any time. They were first introduced in the UK by Section 51 of the Road Traffic Act of 1960.

Dunstable

Dunstable is a market town in Bedfordshire. It lies on the eastward tail spurs of the Chiltern Hills, 30 miles (50 kilometres) north of London. These geographical features form several steep chalk escarpments most noticeable when approaching Dunstable from the north. 

Dunstable is the largest settlement in Central Bedfordshire and the third largest in Bedfordshire behind Luton and Bedford.

Gary Cooper, Hollywood film actor, went to Dunstable Grammar School from 1910 to 1913.
