I'm Leaving in 1909. And the First American Oil Reserve.

            The Postcard

A B. & R. Series postcard. Note the cross that has been placed under the 'i' in the word 'plaice'.

The card was posted in Campbeltown using a ½d. stamp on Monday the 27th. September 1909. It was sent to:

Mrs. A. Maxted,
20, Osborne Road,
Southsea,
Portsmouth,
Hants.,
England.

The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"Dear D,
Just a p/card to tell you
that we are probably
leaving this place on
Tuesday night or
Wednesday morning.
With love to you and
Baby from yours as
ever,
Victor."

Campbeltown

Campbeltown is a town and former royal burgh in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It lies by Campbeltown Loch on the Kintyre peninsula. Campbeltown became an important centre for Scotch whisky, and a busy fishing port. The 2018 population estimate was 4,600, indicating a reduction since the 2011 census.

The First American Oil Reserve

So what else happened on the day that Victor posted the card?

Well, on the 27th. September 1909, President Taft created the first American oil reserve, withdrawing 3,041,000 acres (12,310 km2) of public lands in California and Wyoming from further claims, and reserving the oil for use by the United States Navy. 

Ten days earlier, U.S. Geological Survey Director George Otis Smith had warned that oil lands were being claimed so quickly that they would be unavailable within a few months. Smith further warned:

 "After that the government will be 
obliged to repurchase the very oil 
that it has practically given away." 

In 1910, Congress passed the Pickett Act, which gave the President the authority to set aside federally owned resources as necessary for public purposes.

Gyula Donáth

The day also marked the death in Budapest at the age of 59 of the Hungarian sculptor Gyula Donáth.

Gyula, who was born in Pest on the 13th. March 1850, studied in Vienna with G. Semper. From 1880 onwards he worked in Budapest. His sculptural style integrated elements of classicism and academic as well as the Art Nouveau styles.

 Much of his output as a sculptor was creating art for tombs, though he also created public monuments for both the Millennium of Hungary (1898) and the Imperial Jubilee, (1908). 

Donáth sculpted the "Statue of Werbőczi" (since then demolished).

Donáth's huge bronze Turul on the terrace of Buda Castle, high above the Danube, was erected in 1903. It is one of the symbols of Budapest.
