Spanish moss flower (Tillandsia usneoides)

            Unlike true mosses which never flower, Spanish moss is a  tillandsia with tiny yellow flowers which grow facing downward, so its flowers are rarely seen. This is the first and only one I've spotted on a plant that's been hanging outside for years. 

Since epiphytes get their moisture from the air, you wouldn't think this plant would do well in semi-arid Southern California, but this seems to manage because a marine layer rolls in almost every evening and boosts the humidity.
