Aeroflot (Aэрофлот) Soviet Airlines began flying the Ilyushin / Iliouchine Il-62 "Classic" on transatlantic service to Montréal, Québec, Canada in 1967. Though an indigenous design, the long-range Il-62 looks similar to a Vickers Super VC-10. 

This Il-62 is one of the last tin toy airliners, accurately-modeled and good quality. Only its horizontal stabilizers and its jet engine nacelles are molded of plastic. The toy was made in an East German state factory "VEB Plasticart" of Annaberg-Buchholz, Saxony, better known for a range of plastic model kits of Soviet and other aircraft such as the Dassault Mercure jet airliner. These goods were exported to Western Europe during the 1970s and 80s. This example was purchased new in Venezia on August 18, 1980.

The toy is lithographed in full realistic late 1970s KLM (Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij) Royal Dutch Airlines colors with fictional lettering on the wings. At least one Aeroflot Il-62 was painted with KLM titles when it flew a Tokyo-Moscow-Amsterdam route beginning in 1971. Of course, no Il-62 was painted in full KLM livery, ever; the VEB Plasticart design team chose the livery to make the toys attractive to Western European toy/souvenir markets, undoubtedly. These KLM toys, and their sister ships in red with generic "Intercontinental" titles, remain easy to find today.
