            Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner William Bratton presided over the hiring ceremony today for 1,369 new police recruits who begin six months of Police Academy training this week. The new hires were sworn-in during a ceremony at Queens College.

Of those sworn in, 40% have earned a bachelor’s degree, 3% earned a master’s degree or a juris doctorate. This class has one of the largest percentages of woman, with 22% being female. Eight percent of the recruits have previous U.S. Military service:

17 U.S. Navy
9 U.S. Air Force
3 U.S. Coast Guard

Some of the recruits in this class previously served as New York City traffic enforcement agents, school safety agents or in other civilian roles, including police cadets who were promoted and recognized with certificates after the swearing-in ceremony. The police cadets were assigned to various commands citywide in clerical roles while they attended college.

The new hires come from around the globe, with 17% born in 47 different countries, speaking 39 different languages.
