Because The Night
one of my favourite Springsteen songs
I haven't a clue as to why it had popped into my head
I think I've not heard it in years
*makes a mad dash to iTunes*
perhaps the thought of taking night shots with the new lens had the word 'night' stuck in my craw
I've never seen Springsteen live
probably never will
I'm not much of a stadium concert-goer these days
I'm trying to recall the last concert I saw in a large venue
might have been Marshall Tucker back in 1978
It was my mother's birthday
the next day, we were pounded by a blizzard that shut down BGSU for three days
I was sick as a dog with mono (which I didn't know at the time)
a bunch of my dorm mates and I drove up from Bowling Green, Ohio to Toledo to see them at the Sports Arena
Wet Willie opened for them
seating was first come-first-served
we made the rush to the front of the stage and were immediately in front of the stage
it was great!
except that I didn't like Wet Willie
and it was TOO FUCKING LOUD!!
it seemed to irritate whatever it was that had me feeling like crap, so I decided to walk the concourse of the arena until Marshall Tucker came on
I loved them at the time so I endured the pain brought on by the major dose of decibels
oh, crap!
I just remember I saw Dylan in Dayton, Ohio later that year
that's a whole 'nother story that I suppose will have to wait for some other time
Oh!
So... getting back to Springsteen
It was the summer of 1978 that I lived just outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota — in Burnsville
I don't recall the occasion, but a Minneapolis radio station was broadcasting a simulcast of a Bruce Springsteen concert from Cleveland, Ohio
it probably was in support of his latest record, 'Darkness On The Edge Of Town' which was constantly playing in my tape player that summer
Yes, tape player
(for the record, I hate tapes now)
It was an amazing thing
there probably is no better ticket value than what a Springsteen ticket brings
he seems to give so much during a show
he played 'Because The Night'
I'd heard it before
perhaps Patti Smith's version
I don't know
but that's my Springsteen/'Because The Night' story
even though it had very little to do with Springsteen *or* 'Because The Night'
deal with it!
