Snowstorm of November 29, 1950 - 900 Block of Market Street

Low temperatures and the remnants of an extratropical cyclone left the valley digging their way out of one of the worst snowstorms ever recorded on this day, November 29, 1950. Following a four-day storm that struck the community the Friday following Thanksgiving, official snow coverage ranged from 26 inches at the Warwood dam to some 36 inches in hilltop communities. The City hired bulldozers from private companies to remove the snow from the business district. The snow was loaded onto a fleet of trucks and the snow was hauled away to be dumped in Wheeling Creek. As crews worked to clear the streets on the 29th, The Intelligencer reported scarcities of milk and bread where delivery trucks were unable to get through, thousands of dollars worth of property damage, and at least one death indirectly caused by the storm.
