Thousand Yard Stare - a photo on Flickriver

            A young-looking deer freezes in the woods near the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail in Chelmsford, MA.

She and I stared at eachother for a minute or so before I took a few steps and she ran off. You can't really tell from the photo but she was probably 20 or 30 feet away, well off of the bike path where I was standing.

Luckily for me I was trying out my new zoon lens yesterday afternoon and this was definitely a shot that wouldn't have been possible without it.

For those who like techie talk, it's the Olympus Zuiko 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6. The crop factor on 4/3 sensors means the field of view is equivalent to 140-600mm on a 35mm camera. I bought it for our upcoming cruise and so far I'm loving the sharpness and extra range. 

On the other hand, the short end of the range is much further than I'm used to, meaning that I need to learn to see and compose shots very differently. With this lens I often position myself to take a shot only to find that I'm too close to get everything in the frame, or too close for the lens to focus at all. It's very disorienting!
