Ocean, city, haiden shrine, shintai (boulder venerated)

            This Sunday afternoon photo in Shingu shows part of the Kamikura Jinja, high above the city of 27,000 below. The Pacific Ocean presents a distant line on the horizon. The huge boulder encircled by a shimenawa is what people come to pay respects to, although usually is it facing the haiden building where they end up. Long before the people had iron-age tools for sawing planks and planing the contruction materials for a worship hall, this boulder beckoned to them, not as a personal savior but as something of awe or perhaps a raw energy of fear.
