FORT IRWIN, Calif. – The 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment Horse Detachment Color Guard leads the way during the first Fort Irwin Denim Day and March Against Sexual Violence April 26, 2013. Organized by the Fort Irwin and National Training Center commanding general, Brig. Gen. Theodore D. Martin, the march is a part of Fort Irwin’s effort here to raise awareness against sexual violence. The denim day history originates in Italy during the 1990s, when a teenage girl was raped and threatened by her 45-year-old driving instructor. Convicted of the crimes, the instructor appealed all the way to the Italian Supreme Court where the judge overturned the conviction because the girl wore tight jeans, reasoning that she would have had to help the driving instructor take them off. Enraged by the decision, members of the Italian Parliament wore jeans to work the next day in protest. This protest soon spread to the U.S. Congress and has since become an annual global movement in which communities express their support for survivors and declare that there is no excuse for sexual violence.
