He ain't heavy - a photo on Flickriver

He ain't heavy

            It took me a while to work out what was going on here. I thought at first that maybe this seven-spot ladybird larva, Coccinella septempunctata, had just hatched and that was an egg casing or pupa on the right. However, on close inspection I realised that the larva on the left is eating the one on the right. I know ladybirds are carnivorous, which some of us may not realise what with them being so cute and all, but really, cannibalising your own kind is just not cricket, especially as the number of spots shows that it is even a member of the same species.
