Binham Priory

One of the most complete and impressive monastic ruins in Norfolk.

Founded in 1091 by Peter des Valoines, a nephew of William the Conqueror, which makes it one of the first religious foundations established in England after the Norman Conquest in 1066.

Completed around 1244.

Suppressed in 1539, by Henry VIII, and then given to Sir Thomas Paston, a local man and an important royal servant, who dismantled most of the buildings in order to build himself a new house at Wells.

Stone from the priory was also sold and reused in many local houses, particularly around doors and windows.

What remains today is the nave of the original priory church, with its splendid 13th-century west front and fine tiers of Norman arches,
