View of the encampment of the Prince of Wales's Party in the garden of the British Consulate at Beirut (Beyrout).

            This is an albumen print made from an original negative by Francis Bedford, mounted on card. It was taken on Tuesday 6th May 1862 during the Prince of Wales's Tour of the East. The picture shows a general view of the encampment of the Prince of Wales and his entourage used during their stay at Beirut (Beyrout). The Prince's tent is the one on the left with a flag. Twelve other tents of varying size can be seen, as well as members of the Princes's party and local attendants. The horses can be seen mainly grouped together between the trees behind the tents. The houses of Beirut (Beyrout) are behind the trees with the Mediterranean Sea and sailing ships on it in the background. This picture is from Bedford's small photographic folder. It was listed as No. 118 on page 41 of Bedford's catalogue (see P 1761 for details). Bedford described Beirut (Beyrout) as wearing "an almost European air, presenting abundant banking facilities to travellers, and having lines of regularly-sailing English, French and Austrian steamers."  "BEYROUT  May 6/62" in lower left-hand corner. "118 - FBedford" in lower right-hand corner. In ink on the mount: "Encampment of the Prince of Wales at Tripoli".
