El Ponte di Rialto es el más antiguo de los cuatro puentes que cruzan el Gran Canal de Venecia. Estuvo precedido primero por un pontón o puente flotante (Nicolò Barattieri, 1181), y posteriormente por un puente de madera (1250) que fue quemado parcialmente durante la revuelta liderada por Bajamonte Tiepolo (1310), y que se derrumbó una vez en 1444, por el peso de la multitud que se congregó para ver un desfile náutico, y tras ser reconstruido, se derrumbó otra vez en 1524. El puente actual se debe a Antonio da Ponte (1591) y a pesar de que su diseño es visualmente novedoso, no deja de ser un arco de medio punto parcialmente oculto por el nivel del agua. Esta vista es la del lado oriental.

The Rialto Bridge is the oldest and most famous of the four bridges crossing the Grand Canal in Venice. It was first preceeded by a pontoon bridge (Nicolò Barattieri, 1181), and laterly by a wooden bridge (1250), which was partially burnt during the Bajamonte Tiepolo's revolt (1310). In 1444, the wooden bridge collapsed under the weight of a crowd watching a boat parade and, after its reconstruction, it collapsed again in 1524. The present stone bridge, a single span designed by Antonio da Ponte (1591). Despite being visually innovative, it's just a classical arch bridge partially covered by water. In the picture you can see the eastern side of the Grand Canal.
