Sala Capitular, Real Monasterio de Santes Creus, Aiguamúrcia (E)

La Sala Capitular está situada en la parte oriental del claustro anterior, como suele ser habitual en los monasterios cistercienses. Este era el lugar de reunión de los monjes con el abad para hacer el capítulo, es decir, recordar las escrituras de la regla adoptada y conversar sobre asuntos concernientes al monasterio. Los monjes se sentaban a lo largo de los muros siguiendo un riguroso orden de antigüedad. Normalmente, las salas capitulares suelen ser amplias y diáfanas y, en este caso, vemos tres ventanas abiertas en la pared oriental, así como dos ventanales a los lados de la puerta de acceso desde el claustro. La Sala Capitular de Santes Creus es de planta cuadrada, con cuatro columnas que dividen el espacio en nueve cuadrados. En el pavimento se aprecian las lápidas esculpidas en relieve de siete tumbas de otros tantos abades que ocasionalmente fueron enterrados aquí, a pesar de que por norma se les inhumaba en el cementerio común del cenobio

The Chapter House was situated on the eastern side of the cloister, as it usually happens in the Cistercian monasteries. It was the place where the monks would meet the abbot to hold chapter, which consisted in a meeting to read aloud from the rule book and bible and discuss matters concerning the monastery. The monks would sit along the length of the walls in strict age-order. The chapter houses are normally large and enlightened and, in this case, there are three windows on the eastern wall, while two large windows and a porch without door comunicate the meeting room with the cloister. The Chapter House in Santes Creus is square and four columns divide the space in nine smaller squares. On the pavement we can see the carved gravestones of seven abbots who had been eventually buried here, although the community cemetery was the usual place to bury abbots and monks.
