            In the gathering dusk I was not able to achieve very high shutter speed, even with the aperture wide open and ISO pushed to the maximum workable reasonable limit. At 1/200 of a second you can't stop rapid movement, but combined with the image stabilization system in the lens, it was fast enough to secure sharpish images when the birds paused. This meant firing away shot after shot, hoping that one or two would capture a motionless moment.

However, even when I was able to freeze the action, there was still the noise problem that low light, high ISO shooting brings. To deal with this unattractive graininess I turned to post-processing in Lighroom - not a skill with which I claim any great sophistication. What I did was push the noise slider really hard to the right to squelch the grain across the entire image, giving the background a creamy look. Then I selectively added the noise back into the bird, reintroducing some detail into the main subject. Probably a lot of you know this technique, but for me it's borderline rocket science.
