Summertime Northern Hawk-Owl | Surnia ulula | Chouette épervière

            Cruising along the Yellowknife Highway, we looked out the window, and saw a Northern Hawk-Owl. You can see torched trees in the back, and new growth emerging from the ground. This species seems to like burn areas, places where forest fires have created large expanses of grassland - good for their prey, mice and voles.

Hawk-Owls are a low density species, so this was a good sighting. As they don't encounter many people, you can generally walk right up to them. This individual did a face plant nose dive into the grass shortly after the photo was taken, but came up empty and provided no hunter and prey image. You can see by the blood on the bill it is having some success, probably to feed young ones in a nearby nest.
