ᑐᓪᓕᒃ | Purple Sandpiper | Calidris acuminata | Breeding Plumage

            The floe edge was a resting place as well as travel route for various birds. Everyday we saw small numbers of Purple Sandpipers, usually in flight, but sometimes perched at our feet at the water's edge. I reckon they were migrants still heading north.

To approach this bird I moved slowly forward with one of our guides in the lead. Every quarter metre or so he would firmly tap the ice with his harpoon to test if it could safely hold our weight.

Exposing and processing the image was a exercise in creativity. On site to my naked eyes it looked like a black blob on a sheet of blinding white. In Lightroom I pushed the sliders to darken the ice and lighten the bird, resulting in this compromise.
