Northern Gannet | Morus bassanus | Fou de Bassan

            Today we drove from St. John's to the Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve, about a two and a half hour journey. We spent three hours out with the seabirds at the cliff edge, a spectacular place. Black-legged Kittiwake are having a banner year, with two young in many nests, and some with even three. Northern Gannets continue to expand their colony from the rock face up onto the grassy slopes above the cliffs.

Some birds flash photogenic poses for a second, and then are gone. With gannets, I find it's the opposite. They will hold a bad pose for a long time, and require much patience waiting for them to move to a better position. It took a while before this pair would cooperate.
