Winter survivor Common Yellowthroat | Geothlypis trichas | Paruline masquée

            A Common Yellowthroat at sunrise on March 12, 2024 at Charwell Point on the South Shore of Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada. 

This neotropic migrant is common here in the summer, but there are no previous local records for January, February or March. The earliest spring arrival is from the last week of April, so it is safe to conclude that this is an overwintering bird, the first County record of such behaviour. Its usual winter range is well to the south, South Carolina at the closest, Mexico and Central America more typically. 

So, more evidence of global warming. In this case the impact is benign, as although the warbler mistakenly did not migrate south (usually a death sentence), it survived the winter on account of the weather being unusually mild. The broader impact of climate change will not be so happy.

Uncoincidently, On March 8, 2024 I photographed a Ruby-crowned Kinglet at Prince Edward Point, also in Prince Edward County, and also the first instance of the species overwintering in the County.
