Our Lady in Prayer

            Today, 2 December, is the first Saturday of the month, dedicated to Our Lady. We are also on the cusp of Advent, a time of expectant waiting and hopeful prayer. This beautiful 7th-century mosaic depicts Our Lady in prayer, a symbol of the Church in prayer, and of Our Lady expectant and awaiting the fulfillment of God's promises. She is also fittingly dressed in purple, the colour of the coming Advent season. 

This mosaic is in the chapel of St Venantius in the Baptistery of St John of Lateran, Rome.
