Downside North elevation - a photo on Flickriver

            Several architects worked on Downside Abbey's monastic church. The transepts, which date to 1882 are by Archibald Matthias Dunn and Edward Joseph Hansom. The choir, completed in 1905 is by Thomas Garner (who is buried there), and the nave (which was unfinished because of war) is by Giles Gilbert Scott (c. 1923-25). The splendid Lady Chapel in the east end is an early work by Sir Ninian Comper. Sir Nikolaus Pevsner described the Abbey as "the most splendid demonstration of the renaissance of Roman Catholicism in England. If ever there was an excuse for building in period forms in the twentieth century, it is here".
