St Albert the Great - a photo on Flickriver

            "“The whole world is theology for us, because the heavens proclaim the glory of God”. 

These words by St Albert truly characterize this most learned man, who, upon his death in 1280 was already given the appellation, ‘The Great’, and he was called “the wonder and miracle of our time” by his contemporaries because of the breadth of his learning. The source of St Albert’s intellectual curiosity was his faith. Because he believed that the world was created by the divine Logos, so the world is logical, reasonable, and capable of being investigated scientifically. Consequently, his voluminous writings and research range over a “whole world” of disciplines, encompassing anatomy, anthropology, astronomy, biology, botany, chemistry, dentistry, geography, geology, medicine, physiology, physics, psychology, and zoology. No wonder, then, that the Church proclaimed him to be patron of scientists and 'Universal Doctor'."

This painting of St Albert, which must post-date his canonization in 1931 is in the Dominican priory of Sto Tomas in Ávila.
