Weir in the Swamp

            The Cavalier Wildlife Management Area, like the nearby Dismal Swamp, was originally part of a much larger wetland area.  For centuries, canals have been dug across these wetlands in an attempt to drain them. These days, in the areas that have been allowed to remain wild (or to return to the wild), weirs in the canals help prevent the wetlands from becoming excessively dry.  Tannins stain the water a dark color, as well as contributing to the frothiness at the weirs. Chesapeake, Virginia.
