Paintbrush - a photo on Flickriver

            I photographed this Paintbrush (Castilleja) in the mountains near Las Vegas. Although I certainly noticed the high degree of pubescence, I was unsure as to the exact species. My original guess was that it might be Castilleja applegatei. Mark Egger, in his comment below, has identified it as Castilleja martini var. clokeyi.

Mark, in fact, has created an entire Flickr album dedicated to this taxon. In the description that accompanies his album, he points out that the Jepson Manual has reduced C. martini to a subspecies of C. applegatei, but he thinks their earlier status as two separate species is a better conclusion.

I love it when someone as knowledgeable as Mark offers a helpful comment on one of my photos!
