Swan Plant Milkweed in a village garden on the Greek island of Crete

            This plant with the extraordinary bulbous seedpods is the African Milkweed (Asclepias fruticosa) also known as the Swan Plant Milkweed or Tennis Ball Bush. Native to southern Africa, it is often planted in gardens, particularly because it attracts butterflies (Monarch and Swallowtail), but also crab spiders, ladybugs, bees, wasps, ants and moths. 

The plants are part of a garden outside the local kafenion in the small hamlet of Prasses that overlooks a spectacular valley in the Lefka Ori range.
