The Return of the Sawfish - a photo on Flickriver

            At long last, the smalltooth sawfish have reappeared in the shallow waters of the Caloosahatchee at Sawfish Cove.

My neighbor alerted me to a sighting Friday (3/22/24). I snapped a blurry, shadowy image in the turbulent water yesterday. This morning, this young guy met me on my approach and posed in the still waters of the beachfront for several snaps as well as for several minutes of video documentation.

This juvenile is among the very first sightings in this habitat since Hurricane Ian roared through here 17 months ago, as far as I know.

At only about 3 feet long from tail to the tip of its rostrum, this specimen may have birthed in recent months. Litters have been reported of up to 20 pups and the reproductive cycle is believed to be every two years for smalltooth sawfish (Pristis pectinata).

Adults may reach over 20 feet in length and weigh up to 1000 pounds. The species is listed as critically endangered across the world.
