What's that smell?

            1865AD, River Fleet, Final Chamber, London.  Joseph Bazalgette stands at the exit of the Fleet River into the River Thames.

London's drainage had feed into the River Thames during the early 19th century making the river like an open sewer.  This was causing problems for the public health of Londoners and as a result plans were made to modernise the sewerage system, which were finally actioned after the Great Stink of 1858.

Joseph Bazalgette (he was knighted in 1875) was given the responsibility for the work.   His solution was to construct underground brick main sewers with the outflows being diverted downstream where they exited into the Thames.  Bazalgette allowed for a large diameter sewer as he based his calculations on a dense population and a high allowance of sewage production by per person. Because of this the system has been able to cope with increase in London's population.  The works were started in 1859AD and completed in 1865AD.
