Battle of Mount Badon - a photo on Flickriver

            491AD, Mount Badon, England.  Following the departure of the Roman forces from England, Anglo Saxon warriors have come to the island (possibly from invasion or as employed mercenaries).

With the Anglo-Saxon's growth in power and increased land in the islands, the Briton Kings (Romano-British) joined together under a war lord named Ambrosius Aurelianus (Arthur) and formed an army.  Meanwhile Ælle of Sussex pushed further west with his Saxon army threatening to take more land.

The two armies met and fought at Badon Hill, where Arthur inflicted a severe defeat on the Saxon  army.  The victory stopped Saxon expansion for the next fifty or more years, giving the island a rare interlude of peace and prosperity.

Exactly where the battle was fought, how it was fought, the composition of the armies, and exact details of Arthur (Ambrosius) are open to interpretation.  I have taken the date from Bede's 'The Ecclesiastical History of the English People'.
