30 September 2020 — Flagstaff, Arizona — European Wool Carder Bee

            A European Wool Carder Bee/Anthidium manicatum. I've been watching these patrol the flowers in the back yard the last couple weeks. Had one of them hover at eye level and try staring me down one day & wouldn't for a moment let me aim the camera lens at it. Finally had one of them land longer than a fraction of a second today.
It's a non-native species, introduced in the northeast US in the '60s. It has gradually spread westward and eventually documented in California in 2007. A bee/wasp specialist at iNaturalist thought this may be the first documented in Arizona—Not sure how one confirms that—but that would apparently complete its spread to all western US states.
