Theatre Royal, Castlemaine, Vic. - a photo on Flickriver

The first Theatre Royal on the site opened in 1854 was a wooden structure with canvas walls and roof burnt down after six months trading. The current structure was built in 1855 and began hosting major national and international touring artists including Lola Montez – the “darling of the diggers.” However in 1887 the theatre was gutted by fire although the original stone walls and tin ceiling survive.
By 1915 the Theatre Royal had started screening silent films and had been re-named Royal Picture Hall (People’s Popular Picture Palace). It was remodelled in 1938 in an Art Deco style and converted to “talkies”.

By the end of the second World War, the theatre was showing movies to as many as 4,500 patrons each week. By the mid 1970s the impact of television resulted in building modifications to reduce the size of the cinema. In 1980, live entertainment returned to the theatre with some success. By 1985, the venue continued to show movies, albeit infrequently and opened each weekend as “The Pit” nightclub.

In 1998 “The Pit” closed and in 1999, The Theatre Royal reopened as a family-orientated cinema and occasional live venue following a major refurbishment. Under new ownership, The Theatre Royal became one of the country’s leading music venues between 2004 and 2012.

Following two more changes of ownership, the Theatre Royal now claims to be the oldest continually operating theatre on the Australian mainland.
