New Oxford Theatre, Manchester - a photo on Flickriver

Located on the corner of Oxford Street and Chepstow Street, this city centre cinema opened as the Picture House on 15th December 1911 with film of “Captain Scott’s Expedition to the South Pole”.
It was soon re-named Oxford Picture House and then Oxford Theatre in April 1927. By August 1927 it had been re-named again as New Oxford Theatre. In February 1929. Originally operated by the Provincial Cinematograph Theatres(PCT), the cinema was over by the Gaumont British Theatres chain in February 1929, but by August 1931 it was owned by the J.F. Emery Circuit who operated it until 1946. It was equipped to screen CinemaScope films in 1953, and became (together with the Deansgate Cinema) the home of 20th Century Fox films in central Manchester.
On 12 June 1960, the New Oxford Theatre was taken over by the Rank Organisation and became their roadshow house, playing long runs of “Ben Hur” and other blockbusters. In later years after this type of film dried up and the New Oxford Theatre played less popular films. It was closed on 25th October 1980 with David Carradine in "The Long Riders".
In the mid-1980’s it was converted into a McDonalds Restaurant, which remains open in 2017.
As a personal footnote, I recall going to see the 1958 MGM musical, “Gigi” directed by Vincente Minnelli and featuring Leslie Caron, Maurice Chevalier, Louis Jourdan and Hermione Gingold when the movie enjoyed a lengthy run at the New Oxford Theatre
