'On a Carousel'

All the fun of the fair… Chestnut Sunday in Bushy Park, west London. And say hello to William, who lives on the carousel (or should that be merry-go-round?)

The first carousel appeared in Europe in the late 18th century – and these gloriously gaudy merry-go-rounds have been going strong ever since. Then, in 1861, the first steam-powered carousel came along and by 1870 Frederick Savage invented the now classical mechanism that makes carousel horses go up and down, as if they are galloping.

Oh, and here’s a fact that may have escaped your attention: here in the United Kingdom, merry-go-rounds usually turn clockwise with the animals facing to the left. But elsewhere in Europe and in North America, they typically turn counter-clockwise with the animals facing to the right. So there. You read it here first...!
