Mantling young barn owl - a photo on Flickriver

            Young barn owl mantling, concealing its prey with its wings.

This photo was taken under partially controlled conditions. This is a free bird in its natural habitat (a farm) but the birds have been habituated to soft artificial light in a specially prepared open attic. The greatest surprise for me was the complete silence. The owl is suddenly there, without even a whisper. Amazing creatures to observe.
