Lawrence: second Town Hall (c.1935)

This delightfully-Art Deco building was built as the second Lawrence Town Hall, at a cost of $6000 (in today's currency). It replaced the 2-storied Gothic-style Town Hall (at 33 Ross Place, Lawrence) built in 1877.
It opened in 1935, and included the Borough Offices, restrooms, kitchen, meeting rooms, and a large public hall and stage - which also doubled as a picture theatre.
The Borough Council vacated the building on the amalgamation of local authorities in 1989. Tuapeka Gold Print has had its factory here since 1995.

As an historical aside, this building is on the site of Matthews & Chamlmers Blacksmith and Wheelwright Shop. 20yr.old apprentice Patrick O'Leary built the first New Zealand-made bicycle here in 1893.
