Looking up the Crooked River at the SW section of Oregon's Smith Rock. Seen from the base of the Summit trail.

Been here 4 times and it's never enough. So much to amaze and enthrall one. The Crooked River Caldera is the largest in Oregon. 25 miles by 17 miles. A caldera looks like a volcanic crater, but it is actually formed when the overlying rocks collapse when a magma chamber is emptied creating a vacuum below. Smith Rock is along one edge of this massive sunken supervolcano that erupted 29.6 million years ago. Hiking and driving around this caldera and region is literally a trip thru time and demonstrates well how our planet miraculously recovers.
