Sense of Irony - a photo on Flickriver

Sense of Irony

            Yet another image made a few weekends ago on my visit to the lakes with several very interesting and talented photographers. This is unmistakingly Buttermere at sunset and on this particular outing we had left Tim Parkin and Dav Thomas about a couple of miles up the pass and ventured down to this honey spot for sunset! On this occasion I was with Hamish Roots, Rob Hudson, and Adam Clutterbuck and for a change we weren’t all falling over each other’s compositions, (unlike the following day with 11 photographers and at least 25 cameras in about 50 meters of frozen stream).

Anyway, after parking up and wandering over to this amazing location, we all set to work.  It was a still evening and the light and reflections were perfect, (well when the dog walkers / swimmers, had moved around the corner to disturb Hamish that is). We each took it in turns to explore the  thin sliver of headland in the mid distance of this composition, you can just make out Adam doing one of his characteristic long exposures whilst looking at me, wondering why I was contorted only inches from the ground. Anyway, there is something ironic about this image that I debated whether to explore here. For those of you that know Mr Clutterbuck well, you will know his preferred photographic style tends to be square, immaculately composed and of a monotone nature. But ironically for such a master, nay, devotee of shades of grey, he has the brightest almost fluorescent red jacket that has been invented!  Not that this doesn’t look great on him, and I’m sure it makes for a lovely warm beacon for passing coast guards on stormy evenings down on the Summerset and Cornish coast. BUT, in this shot it stands out like a PETER LIK EXCLAMATION MARK!!! So with a pleasing sense of irony, I desaturated him in this shot just to make everybody happy!
