            Charleroi (Belgium) is a town full of former coal mining and steel industry. It also know as “Pays Noir” or "black country".  Although most of the factories have closed since the 1950s, the landscape is still scattered with loads of old industrial sites and buildings. After the general decline of its heavy industry, sadly not much happened to revitalize the city. The Wallonian Government undertook some big projects like a (pre-) metro network, the refurbishment of the city centre and the expansion of the airport. But many projects proofed to be “White Elephants”.  Only the airport project has succeeded – surprisingly – with the stringent and inflexible help of Ryanair. 

The pre-metro network runs partly thru the industrial ruins of Charleroi, resulting more or less in empty trains, stations and platforms. Here you can see the economic downward spiral in full strength. This is strengthened even further by fighting over fraud, corruption and forgery charges within the municipality.

If you want to see social and economic destruction at work and want to take a photo of it, this is the place to go to. It sits up there with Seraing in the top three of desolate towns in Belgium.
