The Crusty Shore of the Salton Sea, California

            The lake's salinity, about 7.5 oz/US gal, is greater than that of the Pacific Ocean (4.7 oz/US gal), but less than that of the Great Salt Lake. The concentration has been increasing at a rate of about 3% per year. About 3.6 million tons of salt are deposited in the valley each year.
