Billingshurst Signal Box seen here in the summer of 1997. The box is a Saxby and Farmer Type 1 built for the London Brighton and South Coast Railway. This design was used by Saxby and Farmer between 1857 and 1868 when it was superseded by the Type 2 design. This Signal Box opened around 1876 and therefore it is most likely that the structure was reused at Billingshurst after being superseded elsewhere on the London Brighton and South Coast Railway system. It is fitted with a 17 lever Saxby and Farmer mechanical frame initially fitted with their 1874 Rocker locking mechanism which was converted to standard tappet locking in 1912. The box closed on the 14th March 2014 and was moved on the 25th March 2014 to the Amberley museum.
