150925_1603_Avonmouth - a photo on Flickriver

            Great Western Railway 150925 stands in platform 2 at Avonmouth waiting to depart with 2K23, 13:15 Avonmouth – Bristol Temple Meads, 15th March 2016. In my fifty plus years of travelling around the rail network the Severn Beech/Avonmouth branch was one of the few lines I have not travelled so with a couple of hours spare I thought I would rectify that at least as far as Avonmouth. The station at Avonmouth dates from 1877 when a single platform station was opened. In 1885 it was rebuilt and increased in size to two platforms. The station went through a number of enhancements in the first part of the twentieth century, most notably a new platform canopy and urinal provided in 1900 and significant enhancements to the station buildings and an extension of the platform and a new Signal Box on the end of the platform in 1904. In 1913 the station employed twenty five staff and adjacent goods yard forty seven staff. Iin 1963, the Beeching report suggested the complete withdrawal of services along the line, but the service to Severn Beach survived. Goods services from the station ended in 1966 and from July 1967 the last of the station staff were withdrawn. The station buildings on the platform survived into the 1970s, as did the footbridge, but with the exception of the parcels office, all were later demolished. The signal box was closed in January 1969 and the parcels office, in use in 2006 as a hairdressing salon has also now been demolished.

Unit History
This Class 150 three car set was formed in 2015 from 150125 with the addition of spare Class 150/2 Driving Motor Second (DMS) 57209 whose original partner 52209 has been withdrawn due to collision damage in 1989. 150125 is one of the first production batch (50 two car units) of “second generation” Diesel Multiple Units. I still consider these to be modern vehicles but they are now over thirty years old as they were built at York works in 1985. When built 150125 was used on East Midlands duties based at Etches Park, Derby and I first saw 150125 at Derby on the 16th January 1986. Following the introduction of the class 156 units on East Midlands duties in 1988 the class 150/1 units migrated to Birmingham suburban duties for the next twenty five years before migrating to Great Western.
