Locomotive History
The 1361 class of five engines was built to replace almost identical but worn-out Victorian locomotives. Their design was based on the 1392 class of the Cornwall Mineral Railways, and they were the last saddle tank engines built by the GWR. They were built to work as Plymouth and Weymouth dock pilots with their wheelbase was just 11 feet in length, enabling the negotiation of tight curves. 1363 spent most of its working life at Laira (Plymouth), being used in the Plymouth docks and is fitted with vacuum brake and steam heating equipment to enable it to haul the ocean liner expresses between the docks and mainline. 1363 also spent some time after the second world war on similar work at Weymouth. 1363 was withdrawn in December 1962 from Plymouth Laira MPD it was bought for preservation by a group of Great Western Society members and presented to the Society. It moved Totnes in August 1964, where it was restored to full working order and in May 1969 it moved to the Society depot at Bodmin. Upon closure of the Bodmin Depot it again moved, this time to Didcot where, after several years use, it is now on static display awaiting its turn for overhaul.
