Shelly Cottage - a photo on Flickriver

Shelly Cottage

            For a few years early in the 19th century this town house was the home of authors Mary and Percy Shelley.   This is where Mary Shelley completed her Gothic novel masterpiece 'Frankenstein' featuring its famous monster.   She had originally begun writing what she had assumed would be a short story as part of a horror story writing game, but with Percy Shelley's encouragement, she expanded the tale into her first novel, published in 1818 when she was just 20-years-old.  The Shelleys moved from the cottage in 1818 and at some point afterward the property was split into the four homes that remain in place today.
