Eastern Screech Owl - a photo on Flickriver

Sylvie, an Eastern Screech Owl (Grey), was a fledging when she arrived at the Raptor Trust on July 30, 2005. She was found on a lawn under a tree and was possibly cat or dog caught. In the wild,Screech owls prefer open woodland terrain and live in rural suburbs, as well as city parks. They nest in tree cavities and will also nest in man-made boxes. The Screech owl's call is a mournful trill similar to the descending whinny of a horse. Sylvie has a mid-shaft humeral fracture in her right wing, which was pinned. Because of her injury, she has no sustainable flight. On October 12th, i attended the 'Raptor Trusts' photo shoot, which was awesome! For those not familiar with the Raptor Trust, check out the Raptor Trust Website for information of all the great work they do (theraptortrust.org). They are located in Millington NJ (Great Swamp)The number of birds they rescue every year is really quite amazing.The photoshoot happens twice a year. It allows 10 photographers a chance to get up close to a few of the birds. It was real informative, and it was awesome being able to get close to these amazing birds. (We saw Screech Owl, Barred Owl, Barn Owl, Red-Tailed Hawk, Broad-Winged Hawk, American Kestrel an a Peregrine).
