An Evening with Angie Thomas @CPCC 2019

Inaugural winner of the Walter Dean Myers Grant 2015, author Angie Thomas visited Charlotte during 2019's Community Read. Considered required reading by The New York Times and Entertainment Weekly, "The Hate U Give" has been published in 20 countries and is a major motion picture. The story revolves around 16-year-old Starr Carter, an ordinary girl in extraordinary circumstances addressing issues of racism and police violence with intelligence, heart and unflinching honesty.

During the hour-long program, Angie Thomas inspired guests to find their voices and pursue their inner activism. Topics included inspiration for the book, how recent political events in the country became personal for affected communities, and how art can turn into activism. Following her discussion was a Q&A and book signing.

Community Read is presented in cooperation with over 30 partner organizations to build a stronger community. Information about this event and more can be found below:
