my commute home, as seen by google and flickr

This is a map of my 36-mile commute home from work going north on the 101 freeway up the penninsula -- from Yahoo! campus in Sunnyvale to my home in San Francisco -- as seen overhead by Google's new satellite maps. This is what the northbound looks like to me while I'm driving at twilight. And this is what I look like while driving the convertible.

Even though this commute is only 36-miles each way (only!), it takes usually 1-hour or more each way due to the traffic on the 101.

Also, there can be *radically* different weather at either end. During the summer, it can be 90 degrees in Sunnyvale and 45 degrees when I get home to San Francisco. When you're driving a convertible with the top down (as I often am) -- this rapid change in temperature is excrutiating. Even with the heated seats turned up all the way, I am frozen solid by the time I get home and park in my driveway. I usually feel like pulling over to put the top up (it won't go up while the car is moving!) is a cop-out.

This is the scene from the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake that flashes through my head every time I drive over the Bay Bridge.
