ZION GATE, JERUSALEM, ISRAEL, 2008

            In the picture you can see the scars on gate and wall, after several combats in the last centuries.

Zion Gate (Hebrew: Sha'ar Zion, Arabic: Bab Sahyun) also known in Arabic as Bab Harat al-Yahud ("Jewish Quarter Gate"), or Bab an-Nabi Dawud ("Prophet David Gate"), is one of eight gates in the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem.

Zion Gate was built in July 1540, west of the location of the medieval gate, which was a direct continuation of the Street of the Jews (also known the Cardo).

Six sentry towers were erected in the southern segment of the wall, four of them situated in the Mount Zion section.

In the second half of the nineteenth century, a leper colony, slaughter house and livestock market were situated in the vicinity of Zion Gate.

Towards the end of the nineteenth century, shops were built along the length of the southern wall which were torn down during the British Mandate.

On May 13, 1948, as the British Army withdrew from Jerusalem, a major from the Suffolk Regiment presented Mordechai Weingarten with the key for the Zion Gate.

In 2008, restoration work was carried out on the gate, marking its 468th birthday.

En la imagen se pueden ver las cicatrices en puerta y muro, tras varios combates en los últimos siglos.

La Puerta de Sión (en hebreo: Sha'ar Zion, en árabe: Bab Sahyun), también conocida en árabe como Bab Harat al-Yahud ("Puerta del Barrio Judío"), o Bab an-Nabi Dawud ("Puerta del Profeta David"), es una de ocho puertas en los muros de la Ciudad Vieja de Jerusalén.

La Puerta de Sión fue construida en julio de 1540, al oeste de la ubicación de la puerta medieval, que era una continuación directa de la Calle de los Judíos (también conocida como el Cardo).

Se erigieron seis torres de vigilancia en el segmento sur del muro, cuatro de ellas situadas en la sección del Monte Sión.

En la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, una colonia de leprosos, un matadero y un mercado de ganado se ubicaron en las cercanías de la Puerta de Sión.

Hacia fines del siglo XIX, se construyeron tiendas a lo largo del muro sur que fueron derribadas durante el Mandato Británico.

El 13 de mayo de 1948, cuando el ejército británico se retiraba de Jerusalén, un mayor del Regimiento de Suffolk le entregó a Mordechai Weingarten la llave de la Puerta de Sión.

En 2008 se llevaron a cabo los trabajos de restauración de la puerta, con motivo de su 468 cumpleaños.
