INSIDE THE RURAL CHURCH OF OLLEROS DE PISUERGA, PALENCIA, SPAIN (2004)

This church dedicated to Saints Justo and Pastor is a rock hermitage located in the town and district of Olleros de Pisuerga in the municipality of Aguilar de Campoo in the province of Palencia (Spain).

EXTERIOR: A few meters away from the urban core, is the church of Santos Justo y Pastor, a relevant example of rock architecture in the Pisuerga valley, excavated on a promontory of sandstone nature. Associated with the church, there is the rock necropolis, with trapezoidal and oval anthropomorphic and bath graves, as well as a kind of caves or habitats also excavated in rock, possibly pre-Romanesque and with a sacred character in origin. Exempt and displaced a few meters to the south, the bell tower is located.

The church has a somewhat atypical north-south orientation, a consequence of the very arrangement of the stone boat in which the cave is excavated. A recently built ramp leads us directly to the church atrium, from which the cubic-shaped portico is accessed, with Tuscan columns at the corners topped with capitals where the wooden beams that make up the roof rest. The current cover made with sandstone ashlars attached to the stone has a semicircular arch with radial voussoirs and a shield on the key.

Above, separated by an emblem molding with the symbols of passion, flanked by two arrowhead-shaped decorations. Finishing off the ensemble, there is a small belfry of modern manufacture with a single opening to house a bell.

INTERIOR: The lighting of the interior of the church is resolved through various open spans in the front wall. The interior of the church, imitating the structure and typical volumes of an exempt Romanesque church, presents two naves, finished in semicircular apses crowned with furnace vaults and with the carved roof in the shape of pointed barrel vaults simulating being supported by scalloped arches, also carved from natural rock. Four supports divide the naves, it is a pillar at the foot, carved directly into the rock and three columns, two of them Tuscan and inserted in later times and the third located next to the head, carved out of the stone itself from a pillar cruciform that must have existed in the Romanesque period. At the foot of the church, there is a simple wooden choir.

The church preserves remains of mural painting, behind the altarpiece behind the central niche, in an arcosolio located on the wall of the Gospel, where schematic geometric representations appear next to the sun and moon in blue tones from the Renaissance period and on the entrance door to the sacristy, with the representation of a Latin cross with geometric rhomboidal motifs, surrounded by schematic plant elements in reddish tones, dated in the 17th century.

THE ROCK: The sandstones in which the church is excavated are medium to very coarse grained, white in color with cross stratification and very colorful overlapping Liesegang bands. They correspond to fluvial facies of the Utrillas Formation, formed in a transgressive phase of the mid-Cretaceous (Upper Albiense - Cenomanian). (Source: Wikipedia)
