MOSQUE OF MUHAMMAD ALI (CAIRO, EGYPT, 2010)

The Great Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha, or Alabaster Mosque, is a mosque situated in the Citadel of Cairo in Egypt and was commissioned by Muhammad Ali Pasha between 1830 and 1848.

Situated on the summit of the citadel, this Ottoman mosque, the largest to be built in the first half of the 19th century, is, with its animated silhouette and twin minarets, the most visible mosque in Cairo.

The mosque was built in memory of Tusun Pasha, Muhammad Ali's oldest son, who died in 1816.

This mosque, along with the citadel, is one of the landmarks and tourist attractions of Cairo and is one of the first features to be seen when approaching the city from any direction.

The mosque was built on the site of old Mamluk buildings in Cairo's Citadel between 1830 and 1848, although not completed until the reign of Said Pasha in 1857.

The architect was Yusuf Boshnak from Istanbul and its model was the Sultan Ahmed Mosque in that city.

The ground on which the mosque was erected was built with debris from the earlier buildings of the Citadel.

There is a monumental tower clock in the middle of the northwestern riwak, which was presented to Muhammad Ali by King Louis Philippe of France around 1836-1840.

The clock was reciprocated with the obelisk of Luxor now standing in Place de la Concorde in Paris. It is a very simple tower clock with three trains, and no remontoire. (Source: Wikipedia)

La Gran Mezquita de Muhammad Ali Pasha, o Mezquita de Alabastro, es una mezquita situada en la Ciudadela de El Cairo, en Egipto, y fue encargada por Muhammad Ali Pasha entre 1830 y 1848.

Situada en la cima de la ciudadela, esta mezquita otomana, la mayor que se construyó en la primera mitad del siglo XIX, es, con su animada silueta y sus minaretes gemelos, la mezquita más visible de El Cairo.

La mezquita se construyó en memoria de Tusun Pasha, el hijo mayor de Muhammad Ali, que murió en 1816.

Esta mezquita, junto con la ciudadela, es uno de los puntos de referencia y atracción turística de El Cairo y es uno de los primeros elementos que se ven al acercarse a la ciudad desde cualquier dirección.

La mezquita se construyó en el emplazamiento de los antiguos edificios mamelucos de la Ciudadela de El Cairo entre 1830 y 1848, aunque no se terminó hasta el reinado de Said Pachá en 1857.

El arquitecto fue Yusuf Boshnak, de Estambul, y su modelo fue la mezquita del Sultán Ahmed de esa ciudad.

El terreno sobre el que se erigió la mezquita se construyó con escombros de los edificios anteriores de la Ciudadela.

En el centro del riwak noroccidental hay un reloj de torre monumental que el rey Luis Felipe de Francia regaló a Muhammad Ali hacia 1836-1840.

El reloj era recíproco con el obelisco de Luxor que ahora se encuentra en la plaza de la Concordia de París. Es un reloj de torre muy sencillo, con tres trenes y sin remontar. (Fuente: Wikipedia)
